Well this week has been a very busy time not only because it is a week before Christmas but as you have read John’s surgery was Monday but there is so much else to do during this week. As a caregiver I have been very busy with John making sure he is comfortable and getting things he has needed. I also have had the responsibility of picking up my grandchildren from school everyday this week at 2:30 in the afternoon. They have been extra good knowing Santa is coming and hoping they stay on the Nice List. Usually John and I share this task together but this week it has fallen on my shoulders totally.
There have been many activities at the kids school that we would have gone to as a couple but John was not able to travel to the school. So grandma went to celebrate parties in the pre-k 4 and 1st grade classes . Unfortunately I missed a concert which was an early morning presentation. Being the caregiver to all of them I had to choose which I was going to miss. Our daughter taped the concert and sent it to us. It was great.
As a caregiver sometimes the choice we make for ourselves are difficult. We have to miss things in order to take care or OURSELVES! We must remember that our health and time is important to us as well as the ones we take care of. Resting and not pushing to do EVERYTHING is imperative to being an effective caregiver. If you are sick you are not good for the other patient. I am the kind of person who wants to do everything and be there for everyone . I sometimes forget that I cannot do it all. Parties are my favorite thing to go to and love socializing with people. One of the teachers the other day asked me “Why are you here with all that is going on in your home” , I responded ” I enjoy this and love it.” The choice is hard to stop sometimes and take time for yourself. It is necessary for all caregivers to recognize this and do it. We tend to forget ourselves and keep plugging along. It is a sacrifice giving up something you enjoy , just to rest ! But that rest is important to be an effective caregiver.
I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas ,a Happy Hanukkah and the best in 2012 for all.
